As we embark upon these final weeks of our Jewish year, approaching Rosh Hashanah next month, our focus as a community is on journeys. In these final Torah portions of the year, from Devarim/Deuteronomy, our Israelite ancestors are nearing the end of one journey, approaching a new one. Their sojourn in the wilderness is coming to an end and they are perched on their difficult trek into the Land of Israel. Much less dramatically, we approach the end of this year’s life journey and prepare to embark upon a new journey this next year. My hope, as your rabbi previously unknown to you, is that our journey will be filled with promise, learning and maybe a laugh or tear or two.
